Transitioning to School!

 Transitioning Back to School
submitted by Tara Glanton Executive Director Children's Learning Center (Lawrence, KS) & KAEYC Board Member

As we begin transitioning from our summer fun into a new school year, it's best to recognize and validate what our young children must be feeling. As parents, we also experience some of the same feelings and emotions.

Here are a few suggestions to help ease anxiety, sadness, frustration, and fear during times of separation:

--Visit the classroom and meet the teacher prior to the first day (get down on the floor and read a book, join in a mealtime, play outdoors)

--Ask the teacher to take a picture with your child so you can talk about him/her at home, take some pictures of the school and classroom as well

--Have your child help create a morning ritual (eat together, sing a song on the way to school, give a hug/kiss, high-5, and wave)

--Send a picture of family members on the first day of school and let your child hold the photo after you leave

--Allow yourself to experience the same feelings your child does and pay close attention to physical changes in your body: sweaty palms, rapid heart rate, lump in throat (holding back tears); recognize your strategies for coping and teach these same strategies to your child.

Have a great year!
